Helpful tips for wedding guests

Wedding websites, print material and professionals tend to gear all of their advice towards the bride and groom, but where’s the help for people attending the nuptials as a guest? If you’re planning on attending a wedding soon, here are some tips that should get you through the celebration in one piece:

• Bring cash: It’s a good idea to bring some cash, for things like the “money dance,” tips for the bar, and in the unlikely event there is not a hosted bar.
• Dress appropriately: Be sure to dress with the weather and venue in mind. Too often I see people unprepared and uncomfortable because they didn’t plan ahead.
• Gifts are always accepted, even after the wedding: Sometimes it’s difficult to bring or even buy a gift after all of the travel and other expenses you’ve accumulated as a guest of the wedding, so if you need a little more time, you traditionally have up to a year to do so.
• Ladies, bring flats: You know you’re not going to last more than a few hours in heels, so be prepared and bring some comfortable shoes to change into so you can enjoy the wedding.
•If you’re traveling to a wedding from out of town, make travel and hotel accommodations in advance: Book early to find the best rates, and if hotel room blocks have been arranged for you to use, take advantage of them before the rooms fill up, since often times there are a limited amount of rooms available for the discounted rate.
