There is something to be said about Southern California’s jaw dropping coastline with its pristine beaches and dreamy blue ocean. If you’re searching for a chill, beachy wedding venue then Del Powerhouse might be perfect for you to tie the knot! Nestled above the clean Del Mar Beach, the Powerhouse is situated right next to a vibrant rolling lawn. This stark contrast of colors offers a breathtaking scene that your guests will be talking about for years to come.
The property accommodates up to 115 guests for the wedding ceremony and reception. The ceremony will be under gorgeous trellis-covered verandas just steps away from bright green lawn and views of the sandy beach and Pacific Ocean. It really is on the edge of the water. This area is just far enough away from the sound of the waves so rest assured your vows will not be drowned out!
The reception hall building was originally built in 1928. It supplied hot water for the surrounding cottages and inn. In the 1950’s it was transformed into a nightclub called The Powerhouse Roaring 20’s where the waitresses dressed in flappers and the bartender wore derbies and vests to create the vibe. Unfortunately the nightclub only stayed in business for about 5 years and was transformed into a desalination plant. Owned by the Universal Water Corporation it tested methods to convert salt water into drinking water. In 1983 the Powerhouse was purchased by the City of Del Mar and once again revamped into a community center with keeping the beauty of the surrounding coastline intact.
The inside has a balcony surrounding the entire dining area and dance floor. It has a beach cottage feel to it without seeming too formal which is perfect for this area and setting. The bathrooms are public for park and beach goers but is not a huge deal since the location is so mesmerizing. There’s a parking lot right across the street and plenty of street parking in the neighborhood. Curfew is 10pm which is later than most coastal venues. Dinner tables, auxiliary tables and chairs are included with the venue rental too. They allow a BYOB option but require you to hire a licensed bartender to serve the alcohol. You can also hire a professional outside bar service.
The venue’s full day rental is from 12pm-11pm. It’s $4500 during peak season (Mar-Oct) and $4000 during the off season (Nov-Feb) Friday through Sunday.
As the world is adjusting to these unprecedented times, the Del Mar Powerhouse is committed for everyone’s health first and foremost while also being flexible with wedding date postponements.
The Del Mar Powerhouse is one of best venues for an oceanside wedding in the San Diego area. The venue managers Barbara and Maggie are simply amazing and a pleasure to work with. You won’t find a place that has a better value for what it offers especially for a coastal wedding.
